David Kelley

David Kelley is an interdisciplinary artist who works at the intersection of the body and landscape. His experimental documentary and ethnographic practices make use of video, photography, sculpture and performance strategies. His works have been shown internationally in galleries and museums. He has had recent solo shows at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and Commonwealth and Council Gallery in Los Angeles. His recent group exhibitions include The Bank in Shanghai, the de Cordova Sculpture Park and Museum in Massachusetts, Basis Voor Actuele Kunst in Utrecht, MAAP Space in Brisbane, and the Jim Thompson Art Center in Bangkok.

Transamazonia is a suite of video installations, photographs and latex photo-sculptures that operates at the intersection of popular depictions of indigenous bodies, the Amazon landscape, and the legacies of Modernism in Brazil. Since colonialism, the indigenous body in Brazil has been depicted with natural metaphors that follow in well worn essentializations of the noble savage. The myth of the indigenous subject is comparable to Brazil's Modernist capital Brasilia and its afro Brazilian music and dance the samba in its national and international visibility. This suite of works takes a haptic, unsensational, and research-based approach to undermining these notions.

Lauren Ruth

Lauren Ruth is a multidisciplinary artist whose sculpture and performance works engage issues social ritual, participation, and the body. Ruth has exhibited at venues including the Corcoran College of Art + Design, the Delaware Contemporary, and Root Division in San Francisco. Ruth’s artistic collaboration, The Shaft, has performed across the country at venues including the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Soap Factory in Minneapolis, and the Koban Project in Baltimore. Ruth holds an MFA in Sculpture from Cranbrook Academy of Art and a BA in Studio Art from Dartmouth College. Ruth lives and works in Chico, CA and is Assistant Professor of Sculpture at the California State University, Chico.

Ruth’s interactive sculptures and installations playfully engage public audiences in an intimate moment.

Enhancing the scale of sensory organs and body parts, her work amplifies our connection with what is innately human. By considering the body as both subject and object, Ruth’s work speaks to issues of connection, communication, and miscommunication.

Long Runs and Wide Receivers is a sculptural installation that immerses viewers in silent yet graphic references to language, communication, and miscommunication. Disembodied tongues hang mute like trophy banners in a high school gym while ears resembling advertising flags at a used car sale trade solicitations for receptive listening. The work invites viewers to commune with tools for communication and move into a more metaphysical and contemplative space.

type of work:

Photography

Location:

The Icehouse, 625 W Anaheim St, Long Beach, CA 90813

Exhibition Dates:

Saturday, October 7, 2017 to Saturday, October 21, 2017
