TO….OBLIVION: Historic Landmarks Around Los Angeles

Alexander Elliott Miller is a composer and guitarist on the faculty of California State University Long Beach and Chapman University.

“TO….OBLIVION” is a suite of compositions for electric guitar, sound effects and video, inspired by historic landmarks around Los Angeles, of some societal or personal significance. In each video, a slideshow of images of a selected historic site are presented accompanied by environmental sounds, sound effects, and a live guitar soundtrack performed by the composer, examine the constantly changing landscape of our greater city and the forces driving it.

Performance includes presentations of: “The Belmont Tunnel,” an abandoned subway tunnel downtown; “The Walk of a Thousand Lights,” Long Beach’s Pike Amusement Park; “The Dunbar Hotel,” a hotel at the heart of Central Avenue’s mid-20th Century Jazz scene; “Zanja Madre,” the original aqueduct in LA, built by Spanish settlers in 1781; “At Sunset (and Horn Ave.),” the Sunset Strip’s Tower Records; and “Anaheim’s Center Street.”

SynthLab

SynthLab was founded in 2015 and is directed by Rychard Cooper and Matt Pogue.
Rychard Cooper is a professor of composition and electronic music at CSULB. Matt Pogue [Faraday Cage] is a multi-instrumentalist who does graphic design and web development for the music department at CSULB. Together with Tom Koch [univac] (visual effects artist and circuit bender), SynthLab began producing electronic music concerts for CSULB music students. Now, having expanded beyond the University, the collective continues to engage audiences in greater Southern California, most recently having participated in the SoundPedro sound-art festival (June 2017).

SynthLab is a collective of electronic musicians and visual artists based in Long Beach, CA. They produce multimedia concerts featuring original sound experiments, live video projections, and interactive installations.

Potar

Potar is a local wonder of Circuit Bending. For those unfamiliar with bent circuits, circuit bending is the artful rewiring of consumer electronics so that it malfunctions in interesting ways and produces interesting sounds as a result. Potar have been at the vangard of this movement and from time to time taught classes on circuit bending.

Potar is part of phog masheeen's Club Bit Map taking place the the East Village Art Park.

Cannibalistic Caterpillar

Cannibalistic Caterpillar is a sound and vision project by Justin Scheid and Brian Akenoh. The group utilizes live projections, analog and digital synthesis, guitar pedals, homemade noise boxes, and live sampling to deliver intense and spontaneous improvisatory performances. Though primarily a duet, guest collaborators are not uncommon. The group is based in Long Beach, CA.

Pablo Bert

Pablo Bert is an electronic musician and mathematician from Long Beach. Pablo got his start as a chiptune/IDM DJ in 2003. Now he spends most of his time playing with synths and twiddling knobs. He prefers producing without a computer and plans to perform at PUMP for the first time on an all hardware synthesizer and sequencer setup.

Jesse Nason

Jesse Nason is a California native that has been playing keyboards and drums in various bands in the OC/LA area, including Deccatree, AM and currently with Perfect Beings. He is a collector of sounds, and modular is the next target on the checklist. Some of his influences for synth based music are Tom Morello, Pink Floyd, Alessandro Cortini, Suzanne Ciani and Brian Eno. He is a fan of melody, drones, and noise coordination.

Rob Brown and Davy Sumner

Rob Brown and Davy Sumner, both artists and sound engineers, will create a soundtrack for the basement of the Icehouse expanding upon the natural reverberation of sound in the space by emphasizing time, space, tempo, and the experience of moving through both simultaneously.

Rob Brown is a visual and sound artist who lives in Santa Ana, California. He was born in 1981 in Joplin, Missouri and grew up in Reno, Nevada. His practice includes drawing, printmaking, painting and sound installation. His current work deals with ideas of systems, structure, logic and perception. He employs processed and synthesized sound/video alongside prints and drawings. These works are often realized through a set of self-defined parameters which come from personal research and interests. Rob received his MFA in Studio Art Printmaking from California State University Long Beach in 2013.

Davy Sumner is an installation artist, experimental musician, percussionist, sound engineer, maker, and educator in Los Angeles, CA. He creative works are spawned out of noise, physics, biology, and society, often utilizing sound spatialization, feedback-based systems, auditory illusions, chaos, and original electronics and circuits as key elements his work. Davy specializes in imagining and fabricating custom technologies and homemade devices that become animated, unstable, and unpredictable when introduced to the physical world. Davy earned his Bachelor's in Music Composition from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and his MFA in Experimental Sound Practices from CalArts, where he studied with Mark Trayle, Scott Cazan, and Amy Knoles.
