Debbie Carlson

Debbie Carlson is a mixed media installation artist, who lives and works in Orange County. She is a first-generation Taiwanese immigrant, who has been living in the United States since 1988. Carlson received her MFA from California State University Long Beach in 2014, and is currently an adjunct studio art professor at Pasadena City College.

Carlson collects castaway materials and found objects and re-defines their character through her work. Her artistic sensibility is based on the notion of transformation, interconnection, and adaption. “Handmade” is essential to Carlson. Through the simple yet laborious process of binding, pulling, and stitching, she reveals the unforeseen interconnectivity between common materials and objects. Her work is adaptable and evokes infinite possibilities of association and interpretation for the viewer.

Statement:

Debbie Carlson’s work expresses and responds to the human experience. It also unveils the invisible and reshapes our perceptions about the environment and reality. The tactile nature of making art allows her to meditate and reflect on her daily encounters. Through the repetition of tying, binding, pulling, stitching, and assembling, new connections start to unfold and the work evolves as a biomorphic form that inhabits space.

The materials that Carlson uses in her work speak to her ideas about community and harmony as well as my desire to make change and to break conventions. Everyday materials and objects suggest our desires, beliefs, and relationships. They relay memories about our lives but they are also associated with the here and now. Melding eclectic objects and materials together is a means for Carlson to explore the history of the things she possesses and to examine the interconnectivities between the materials around her.

In additional, Carlson’s material choices also allows her to challenge social norms and explore broader possibilities. By carefully placing various scales of familiar objects in juxtaposition with the unfamiliar, an uncanny sensation is provoked. The objects used in a work do not generate anything else rather than the relations among the objects themselves in a specific arrangement. Fragments and the uneventful become a cohesive and meaningful whole. Carlson’s work illustrates the ephemeral and transient nature of human existence. It also demonstrates her evaluation of conventional choices without compromising the integrity of individual ideas in a reality that is constantly shifting and reshaping itself. The fact that this experience is transient and will only take place in a specific setting gives my work a certain dignity.

type of work:

Installation

Sculpture/Assemblage

Location:

The Packard by Millworks, 205 E Anaheim St, Long Beach, CA 90813

Exhibition Dates:

Saturday, October 21, 2017

He received an MFA from California State University Long Beach a BA form The University of California at Irvine. His work has been exhibited internationally.

Mushroom II
“Woodward casts trees in concrete, almost as a strange play on the traditions of bonsai. combining his passion for biology and fine art, he has long been interested in the contemporary landscape that surrounds us-concrete parking lots pressing down the roots of trees: the façade of heavily manicured parks and neighborhoods; and the constant push and pull of negotiating an environment made up of both the natural and manmade. His sculptures nod to the cubes of Donald Judd, while foliage outgrowth interrupts the severity of Judd's minimalism. Woodward states, " I thing of the work in terms of a paradox, which leads to the gaining of a sort of spiritual awareness. The truth of the matter is that our human environment is dictated by a perpetual struggle for control for control between the human and natural environments, where at any given moment one or the other will have the advantage.” Grace Kook Anderson

Chris Miller

He received his BFA from The Pennsylvania State University and his MFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He currently manages the 3D Foundation program and teaches ceramics at the California State University, Long Beach. Miller is also a member of the artist-run gallery, Monte Vista Projects.

Forever Forgetting is an arrangement of hand-made sculptures on deteriorating plaster sheets. Born from both restrained technique and intuitive gesture, these unstable objects create an environment caught between forming and un-forming. Overall, this work functions as an open system, allowing exploration of both the self and the world through material and process.

Terry Braunstein

Terry Braunstein’s work takes the form of photography, artist-made books, installation, video, sculpture and public art. A survey of her work was at the Long Beach Museum in 2015/16, and has been shown in museums and galleries nationally and internationally. It is included in numerous public and private collections, including the Getty Center, National Museum of American Art, Library of Congress, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris. Her awards include a COLA Grant (2017), a National Endowment for the Arts Visual Artist Fellowship, Durfee Grant, and National Book Award from the National Museum of Women in the Arts. Braunstein has been awarded 15 public art commissions, notably a Los Angeles Metro Station, Navy Memorial, Long Beach Entryway, and 6 bus stations. She lives and works in Long Beach.

Terry Braunstein is, first and foremost, a collector, constantly culling images from books, magazines, and various types of ephemera, usually with no specific idea of how they might find their way into her artworks. Old magazines, encyclopedias, maps, dollhouse furniture and bric-a-brac found at flea markets, yard sales, and used book stores provide the raw materials that inspire and fuel Braunstein's work. The common thread has been a kind of visual archaeology, exploring the world through research and scientific observation and challenging the viewer to find meaning by delving deeply into her work. Lifted out of their habitual context and juxtaposed to form new narratives, the selected images travel across time, allowing viewers to contemplate the past, the present, as well as the nature of time itself. The resulting artwork is often autobiographical and addresses issues of daily life and personal memory, asking questions about the hidden forces that govern the universe and human history.

The work, Heart Man, is a mixed-media installation excerpted from a piece titled Time Bound which is about the choices one makes as one ages.

type of work:

Installation

Sculpture/Assemblage

Location:

The Packard by Millworks, 205 E Anaheim St, Long Beach, CA 90813

Exhibition Dates:

Saturday, October 7, 2017 to Saturday, October 21, 2017

Deborah Aschheim

Deborah Aschheim makes installations, sculptures and drawings about memory and place. She has mapped networks of video and light across gallery spaces to replicate the fragile, intimate lattice of her own neural networks, collaborated with musicians to create sound sculptures that play original music based on her favorite words and worked with doctors and neuroscientists to learn about memory and forgetting in the brain. She has had fairly recent exhibitions at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas; Oficina de Proyectos Culturales in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico; Suyama Space in Seattle, WA and San Diego State University. She has created permanent public artworks for the Sandler Neurosciences Center at UC San Francisco; for Amazon.com in Seattle, WA; for the City of Sacramento and for the Los Angeles Police Department. She was Hellman Visiting Artist at the Memory and Aging Center in the Neurology Department at UCSF and has received artists’ fellowships from the California Community Foundation, the Center for Cultural Innovation, The City of Los Angeles, City of Pasadena and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts.

Camelot and other stories:
Camelot is a ghost city. In the mash-up of urban architecture, buildings from different cities, some misremembered or out of scale, some hybrids of two or more towers, and some ghosts of buildings that have been torn down or were never actually built share space in a luminous landscape that resonates with the memories of cities in the visitor’s mind. The installation was originally created for Tom Bradley International Terminal at LAX Airport in response to the unique state of mind of travelers in a disoriented limbo, a state that the artist considers dreamlike and poetic. For PUMP, Aschheim is installing Camelot in a conversation with some other sculptural meditations on Twentieth Century modernist architecture to bring to life a shifting personal geography of memory.

Opening reception: Thursday, October 14th, 6pm - 9pm

Cathy Hsiao

Cathy Hsiao came from a background in craft, specifically weaving animal fibers dyed with plants, raised by a devout Buddhist mom. “Plant and Animal Studio” keeps this name as a token to these histories. Her current practice embeds an intimate politics of rhythm and ritual to translate cultural languages and create new ones. To that end she creates multi-narrative works in sculpture, sound, weaving, photography and video that switch codes depending on context. Many of her processes are grounded in craft practices from Asian textiles such as weaving and natural dyeing. Hsiao iterates these traditions into a vocabulary influenced by the history of Western abstraction.

Songbook for Sculpture / Sculpture Orchestra is an improvisation-based work that transforms sculptures and molds into performative objects by activating their interior spaces and surfaces. The sound rearranges a traditional Taiwanese folk song for guitar, sculptural objects, molds and drum machine and hip-hop. The performance re-choreographs the boundaries between form and use to locate a specific psychic space between one's own voice and it's interior echo, the voice of different languages and cultures. By reviving the sensuousness of objects, their tactile, auditory and participatory potential it aims to produce new hybrid languages for sculpture. A printed score of the performance is produced. Site specific sculptures (freestanding on plinths) are cast from gathered gravel and sand around Long Beach shore and Joshua Tree desert.

type of work:

Performance Art

Sculpture/Assemblage

Sound Art

Location:

The Packard by Millworks, 205 E Anaheim St, Long Beach, CA 90813

Exhibition Dates:

Saturday, October 7, 2017 to Saturday, October 21, 2017

Annette Heully

Annette Heully, a nationally exhibited artist, earned her MFA from California State University Long Beach with an emphasis in Fiber. She received her BA from San Francisco State University with an emphasis in Textiles. She currently lives and works in the Los Angeles area.

In her work there is an intersection between the animate and inanimate as well as references to the body and landscape. She is interested in how over time, seemingly inanimate forms slowly shift, settle, change and become animate. Although the results are not always immediate, our environment and body have a great effect on each other. Over time physical wounds heal into scars, feelings of loss are soothed by time, tides rise and fall, and paths are made as we walk. These phenomena are just as prevalent externally as they are internally. Heully is interested in this intersection and how the beauty, synchronicity and poetics of life can be transformed into a visual, spatial and material experience.

Interconnected are pairs of legs created through knottless netting with waxed linen. Annette creates knotless net over forms of her own legs and over time the forms start to stretch and change capturing a sense of time. The piece was inspired by her mother, with whom she has very similar hands and feet. The piece brings up ideas of past and future generations of her family that share the same hands and feet. The piece also references the ocean and the ties her family has with the sea. Annette’s mother was born and raised in New Zealand and she remembers her telling stories about how she went to the ocean before she left her country to come to the United States. She said that as long as she had the ocean she would always be connected to home. With this in mind, the piece captures the interconnected relationship between past, present, and future as well as the environment.

type of work:

Installation

Sculpture/Assemblage

Location:

The Packard by Millworks, 205 E Anaheim St, Long Beach, CA 90813

Exhibition Dates:

Saturday, October 7, 2017 to Saturday, October 21, 2017
