Narsiso Martinez

He had worked in the fields as a youngster growing up in Oaxaca, Mexico and found solace among the colors of the apples, the richness of the hues in the crops. Although it was back-breaking work, Martinez relished the natural beauty that surrounded him during the summers.
One day he took a closer look at his surroundings. Martinez toiled alongside people whose faces painted a different picture, told a different story. They were stories he wanted to share through his emerging artwork.

Narsiso Martinez was born in Oaxaca, Mexico and currently lives in Long Beach, California. He attended Evans Community Adult School and completed high school in 2006 at the age of 29. He earned an Associate of Arts in 2009 from Los Angeles City College. In fall of 2012, he graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from California State University Long Beach. Currently, he is a Masters of Fine Arts candidate at the same institution. He is also the artist in residence at the Long Beach Museum of Art from August 21 - December 22, 2017.

His work has been exhibited at the CSULB University Art Museum, Art Space Purl art gallery in Daegu, South Korea, Angels Gate Cultural Center in San Pedro, California, Palos Verdes Art Center in Rancho Palos Verdes, California, Firehouse art gallery at the Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge in Louisiana, Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery in Los Angeles, California, Collective Arts Incubator gallery in Highland Park, California, Torrance Art Museum in Torrance, California, Cerritos College in Cerritos, California, and presently at Brainworks art gallery in Los Angeles, California, South Bay Contemporary in San Pedro, California, and at the National Immigration Law Center in Los Angeles, California.

This method allows Alexander to understand the subject clearly and enables him to propose the analogies that are his abstractions of environments both natural and man-made. Humanity's complex relationship to Environment is both temporal and timeless. Alexander's work is an individual formal approach to that relationship.

"Solvang II" and "Solvang III" are two from a series of six paintings based upon photos of the countryside surrounding the Danish-modeled town of the same name, in Santa Barbara County. "Viaduct II" is the 5th and latest painting completed in what will be twelve works from photos in and outside of London, England.

Onley is showing at Co-Op Gallery and Studio on opening night, October 7th from 5pm to 10 pm with Katie Stubblefield, Jennifer Gunlock & Hilary Norcliffe's Timber/Timbre.

Nguyen's work draws upon the imagery of nature, the sciences, and the cosmos but it is not limited to a conventional reading of these realms. It imagines that the depths of the ocean reach into outer space, that through an organic prism, vision can fluctuate between the micro- and macroscopic. Nguyen's practice is devoted to the natural world and its curiosities. It has been her inspiration and a place that she finds meditative and complex but also mysterious. It has allowed her to continuously know more about the world we live in. Nguyen been drawn to 19th century Naturalists like Ernst Haeckel: biologist, philosopher, physician and artist; John Muir: writer, conservationist and advocate of the preservation of the wilderness and Anna Atkins: botanist and photographer.

Visible Invisible will be on display in the front window of Pacific Court and will be viewable 24 hours a day for the run of the exhibit.

“I don’t know how
But suddenly there is no darkness left at all
The sun has poured itself inside me
From a thousand wounds.”- Nikoforos Vretakos

I have gone full circle.

For the first twenty years as a young artist I created large narrative bas-relief figurative sculptures. Working in such a large format required tremendous physical tenacity, which took its toll and, as if by “plan”, brought me back to where my art began many years ago. Over the last two decades, drawing and painting, line and color, contemplative compositions have become my ‘voice’ again.

My recent drawings and paintings from the last two decades have been a personal journey of uncovering and revealing pathways, windows and portals of light and of spirit. Inspired by the Byzantine process of iconography, my paintings have adopted the multi-layered application of paint starting from the darkest value finishing with the lightest value. My painting process is a tenacious pilgrimage on a quest to reveal the light in my works.
These days, when I face my canvas, I seem to be standing on a precipice. I am a witness to voyeuristic conversations exchanged between my mind, my heart and my artist hand. Each new work has illuminated another section of a path that takes me further into un-chartered visceral silence. Creating these works has become a wordless cry to find my way back home again.
Made of Hagop

Made of Hagop is a self-taught mixed media collage artist living in Venice Beach. His work is an exploration in the concept of synergy: the creation of a whole that is greater that the simple sum of its parts. The source materials of his work come from books and materials dated from the early 1800’s to 1900’s , and are retrieved from public domains and libraries from around the world. By constructing unlikely relationships between images, Made of Hagop is able to give new meaning and purpose to the subject matter, thereby challenging society’s preconceived notions regarding race, gender, and culture. Made of Hagop has taken the fine art to the streets in the form of wheat paste. He finds it to be such a powerful medium for expression because it is for and includes everyone.

Desert Queen is an ancient priestess. She is grounded, calm, and abundant- as represented by her bull horns. Her wings are her connection to the divine and she is an embodiment of heaven on earth.

Katie Stubblefield, Jennifer Gunlock & Hilary Norcliffe

Timber/Timbre is the collaborative effort between Long Beach resident artists Katie Stubblefield, Jennifer Gunlock and Hilary Norcliffe. Having known one another and admired each other’s work since their time in CSULB’s graduate Drawing & Painting program in the early 2000’s, this project created an opportunity for the three to combine their unique approaches to art-making and interests into a single thematic installation. Each artist brings an inherent curiosity and whimsy to her work, and explores ways to convey her subject using non-traditional methods and materials. Stubblefield is an accomplished painter who has exhibited nationally and locally at such venues as Jordan Faye Block Contemporary, Baltimore, Maryland; 311 Gallery in Raleigh, North Carolina; Courthouse Arts Center in Woodstock; and Jamie Brooks Fine Art, Costa Mesa. Gunlock has been creating large scale tree collage-drawings in recent years; most notably an 11 x 15-foot mural on paper, “Urban Interface,” for the NEA-funded exhibition "Fires of Change" in Flagstaff, Arizona in 2015. Throughout her career, Hilary Norcliffe has exhibited at such local venues as Irvine Fine Arts Center, Armory Center for the Arts in Pasadena, Angeles Gate Cultural Center in San Pedro, as well as several other venues locally and nationally. In 2016 Norcliffe participated in the event "Here & Now" at The Packard in Long Beach; and in 2013, she designed and oversaw the construction of a twenty-foot tree in "A LOT NORTH," a public art commission for the City of Long Beach.

Timber/Timbre is an immersive, interactive installation evoking an urban forest. Presented at the Creative Artists Cooperative at 1330 Gladys Avenue throughout the month of October, the “grove” will incorporate each artist’s specific thematic interest in trees, with the added additional sensory experiences grafted onto each piece. Comprised of large-scale textured mixed media drawing, video projection, and interactive sculpture, people of all ages will be invited play and contemplate in the dream-like environment of Timber/Timbre. This multi-faceted installation encourages curiosity, contemplation, and respect for trees: growing, felled, whispering, transforming, sheltering, supporting, flexing, singing.

This exhibit may be viewed at the opening event on Oct 7, 5-10pm and the closing event on Oct 22, 1pm-3pm. Thereafter the gallery is open on Saturday 10/14 and Saturday 10/21 from 2pm-4pm. Otherwise it may be viewed by appointment only from Oct 7th - 26th. Contact us to set up your appointment.
