Ihab Ali

Ihab Ali's PUMP performance involves walling off a section of the Icehouse basement using bricks. Visitors will be unable to access a portion of Ihab's installation as the evening progresses.

Ihab Ali was born and raised in Damascus, Syria, before relocated to Southern California as a teenager. He received his BFA in Ceramics in 2016 from California State University Long Beach. Nostalgia permeates Ihab's body of ceramic, performative, and installation work. Furthermore, his work reveals connections between art and life, particularly in regards to political structure, compromise, cultural understanding, and social collapse. Ihab's work has been recently featured at the Hason House exhibition. He currently works as a ceramics technician at Irvine Fine Arts Center.

Ihab Ali is part of Michael Nannery’s Mind Games – Group Exhibition.

Common Sense

"Common Senses", an original aural and visual concept by Martin Espino, explores the 5 Senses by performing ambient and groove oriented music along with Video Digital Artist, William Almas and Cinematographer, Ivan Cordeiro. The three artists will interpret the senses around Eating and Food, of Taste and Smell and also incorporate the Sounds of various restaurants, local eateries, chefs. The artists seek to use all of the other sense, through their performance, to inspire cravings for food. PUMP Patrons are invited to participate on instruments provided by the artists.

Martin Espino has been composting and performing both traditional to experimental music for at least 50 years, focusing on Ancient Mexico. He has performed and toured with musicians from all over the world and at venues like L.A. Philharmonic, in motion picture soundtracks and theatrical works as well as pre-schoolers and cultural events. He is teaches at grade schools, colleges and libraries. He also works as an instruments craftsman.

William Almas began his adventure in the visual arts as a painter. His large scale portraits gave way to mixed media explorations. Faced with the daunting task of storing the fruits of his labors and with the advent of the home computer revolution William upgraded his skill set to digital imagery. This made his life simpler on his day job and offered an opportunity to see what could be done in the virtual environment. Starting by re-imagining his paintings with wild variations of saturated color Almas then moved into the realm of video production. His wild multi-layered "Retina-Burning" visuals have graced screens, walls, buildings, even shrubs in support of performers such as phog masheeen, Martin Espino, Skunk Puppet and Magic Bullet Theory.

Cathy Hsiao

Cathy Hsiao came from a background in craft, specifically weaving animal fibers dyed with plants, raised by a devout Buddhist mom. “Plant and Animal Studio” keeps this name as a token to these histories. Her current practice embeds an intimate politics of rhythm and ritual to translate cultural languages and create new ones. To that end she creates multi-narrative works in sculpture, sound, weaving, photography and video that switch codes depending on context. Many of her processes are grounded in craft practices from Asian textiles such as weaving and natural dyeing. Hsiao iterates these traditions into a vocabulary influenced by the history of Western abstraction.

Songbook for Sculpture / Sculpture Orchestra is an improvisation-based work that transforms sculptures and molds into performative objects by activating their interior spaces and surfaces. The sound rearranges a traditional Taiwanese folk song for guitar, sculptural objects, molds and drum machine and hip-hop. The performance re-choreographs the boundaries between form and use to locate a specific psychic space between one's own voice and it's interior echo, the voice of different languages and cultures. By reviving the sensuousness of objects, their tactile, auditory and participatory potential it aims to produce new hybrid languages for sculpture. A printed score of the performance is produced. Site specific sculptures (freestanding on plinths) are cast from gathered gravel and sand around Long Beach shore and Joshua Tree desert.

type of work:

Performance Art

Sculpture/Assemblage

Sound Art

Location:

The Packard by Millworks, 205 E Anaheim St, Long Beach, CA 90813

Exhibition Dates:

Saturday, October 7, 2017 to Saturday, October 21, 2017

Johnny Shield

Johnny Shield's grandfather made an adventure across the Atlantic Ocean to the United States during World War II, his mother went on a journey backpacking through Europe in the 1970s, and now he embarks on his pilgrimage into the depths of art. Channeling the traditional American pioneering spirit, Johnny aims to conquer ideas that appear unconquerable to him. He physically uses and sometimes alters his body and the physical art gallery to express concepts relating to what it means to be an artist and a contemporary consumer of art.

While performing Body of Work, in front of a gallery audience, Johnny Shield applies his signature and date on the bottom of his foot and then presents his foot in a purpose-built pedestal. This pedestal will hid his legs and waist and present his foot as a standard three-dimensional art object. Sound, smell and visual connection through the medium of tattooing will allow him to connect to the physical art audience.

Johnny's performance will start at 9:00 pm sharp.

type of work:

Performance Art

Location:

The Packard by Millworks, 205 E Anaheim St, Long Beach, CA 90813

Performance date and time:

Saturday, October 21st, 2017, 9:00 PM to 10:00 PM

Beck and Col Stafford

Los Angeles-based artists Beck and Col Stafford use humor and chaos to examine the crisis of human exceptionalism. Through costume-based performance and video, their work explores alternate universes populated with monsters who obsess over humanity and emulate its dominant attributes. Within these universes, Beck and Col analyze humanity’s construction of sexualized, racialized and naturalized others. By removing human attributes, they shift focus from hyper-individualism to a post-anthropocentric perspective, rejecting the view of humanity as the basic unit of reference for knowing the subject.

Chess is widely regarded as an intellectual game, and often used as inspiration in cerebral artworks. This is checkers. Frost Bite! Frost Bite! originated as a short film featuring a game of checkers. Frost Bite! Frost Bite!, a performance in three acts, is an extension of that film. The first is a satire of fascist militaristic displays of power, self-regulation, punishment, and torture. The following act is an improvisational dance by a mercurial creature. The third act is a violent, slapstick battle between the last two remaining pieces on the board.

Frost Bite! Frost Bite! will be performed on the opening night and also run as an installation through the course of the exhibit.

DREAM WALKER

DREAM WALKER is an interdisciplinary creative artist group that creates new artistic experiences by bringing together emerging professionals from various nationalities and fields of practice. We believe the performing arts can create an extraordinary connection between artist and audience capable of making the world a better place. We dream a world where people, art, and technology are truly harmonized. The group was originally formed by Jonghee Woo, the current representative/artistic director of DREAM WALKER, along with emerging artists from various fields of the Korean performance industry. Later, the group branched out into the United States through collaboration with American and international artists from various artistic fields. Today, the group has successfully presented shows both in Korea and in the United States over the past few years.

WE CREATE NEW ARTISTIC EXPERIENCES.
WE CONNECT PEOPLE AND PEOPLE; ARTS AND TECHNOLOGY; DREAMS AND REALITY.
WE SHARE VISIONS AND DREAMS; CREATIVITY AND ENTHUSIASM; IDEAS AND EMOTION.
WE PIONEER UNCHARTED ARTISTIC AREAS, UNEXPLORED PLACES, AND UNDISCOVERED NEW POSSIBILITIES
WE BREAK DOWN THE WALLS OF BOUNDARY, LIMITATION, PREJUDICE, AND OPPRESSION SURROUNDING US.
WE MAKE DREAMS COME TRUE AND WALK A NEW WORLD TOGETHER.

DREAMSCAPE: Multisensory Contemporary Performance (Music, Theater, Dance, Multimedia), Inspired by John Cage's Variations VII (1966), Directed By Jonghee Woo, Presented by Artist Group: DREAM WALKER (approximately 60min)

DREAMSCAPE is a new, multimedia artistic attempt to integrate art and technology, incorporating video, sound, dance, theater, and live performance in order to capture true liveness and creativity. The main concept of the project was originally inspired by John Cage's Variations VII — one of the greatest performances in modern performing arts history — which was first performed in 1966 as part of a nine-evening concert series in New York. It was largely stochastic and of indeterminate length, making use of unrecorded, technologically-produced/electrically-amplified sound, and was the product of collaboration with artists from various fields of practice, including theater artists, dancers, musicians, and engineers.

In this project, we will apply the principle of randomness to select the materials for the liveness of the performance. We will therefore use live sounds, real time audio processing, live video, and improvised dance and acting rather than rely upon pre-recorded media, choreographed dance, scripted acting, or any kind of prepared artistic material.

As in John Cage’s original staging, parallel platforms will be set up in the center of the performance space. On them will be placed technological components including sound generators, video devices, and a variety of high and low technological objects. Performers and sound/video artists will improvise artistic experimentations, responding to one another while actors and dancers interact among designers, objects on the platforms, and video projections on the walls. The audience will stand around the platforms, freely able to walk around the space.

Collaborators: Jonghee Woo (Director/Multimedia Designer) Rodrigo Correia (Cinematographer), Davy Sumner (Musician/Sound Director), Lee Kam Ying (Video Designer), Shawn E. Brown (Actor), Erik Dabrowski(Actor), David Michael Hochwalt,(Actor), James T. Majewski (Actor), Pricilla Jin Chung(Actor), Alan Perez (Dancer), Carrisa Songhorian (Dancer), Alexandre Malrait (Actor)

Hunter Janos & Narae Kim

The Fog Knows is an immersive and physically interactive light projection installation made by projecting animation through fog so that they form moving sculptural pillars, beams, and walls of multi-color light in a space. Experimenting with motion-capture, light sculpture, techniques in animation, projection, and interactive installation, ‘The Fog Knows’ is a highly interdisciplinary project, revealing Hunter and Narae's exploratory aesthetic as a collective - sensitive to color, tone of motion, translucencies and opacities, which lends a certain quality of perception. The title, “The Fog Knows” comes from the message of the piece- how Fog is perspectiveless, and is therefore not limited. If only we could be more like the fog, and slowly become more and more one with the environment that we reside in, and therefore more aware of it.

The performance/installation is a collaborative project between two artists from different parts of the world- Hunter Janos, Afro-Hungarian queer experimental artist, and Narae Kim, Korean visual artist based in Los Angeles. Narae Kim is a visual artist who creates interactive experiences that tune in to the emotional resonance of objects, medium and individuals. Her work experiments the boundary of interactive art and technology as a founding executive at Tamadé, a data-driven virtual reality company. Her recent VR short film 'Pippa's Pan' (Art Director) was showcased at Cannes Film Festival 2017. Hunter Janos is an artist, designer, and inventor who combines mediums to create animated films, sculptures, music, paintings, and other works that have a focus on shifting perspective and cultivating innovative thought. They have showcased their original work at the Museum of Modern Art, on Adult Swim, The US Capitol Building, and in film festivals across the globe. Hunter is currently completing degree in experimental animation at CalArts, and is leading in development on an device that allows the wearer to see in all directions at once.

Takeshi Kanemura

Southern California-based artist Takeshi Kanemura was born in Okinawa, Japan, and lives and works in Los Angeles. He received a BA from University of California, Riverside, an MA from California State University, San Bernardino, and an MFA from Claremont Graduate University.

Kanemura has transcended traditional Japanese art and absorbed those practices into his current art form of mixed media performative art. With the influences of Japanese-origin dance Butoh, traditional large scale Japanese brush stroke painting, and traditional music, Takeshi’s current pieces incorporate all these elements with Americanized flair, to humbly represent the new present-day American status: the amalgamation of one’s identity. Takeshi proudly displays the identity of the Japanese-American. His goals with his art are to promote cultural awareness and the embracing of all cultural heritages.

Everyone has something he/she wishes to reveal. It could be a personal strength, reactions to social inequality, or virtually anything else. In Takeshi’s performance/installation Melt in Your Mouth, he will produce an ideal space for doing this. In each performance, Takeshi will wrap one audience member in a plastic sheet using packing tape to make shapes out of the sheet that at once conform to the person while also extending beyond him/her. The audience member will be able to feel the formation of the plastic, absorb the pressure applied by Takeshi, and hear the loud sounds of the moving plastic and wrenching tape. At last, he/she will become an organic sculpture made of industrial materials. After a few moments, Takeshi will cut into the sculpture and release the person from the object. Then he/she will be able to see the husk of the sculpture. During the entire process, cellist Mei Hotta will play music and/or vocalist Chris Law will sing. These melodic sounds will meld with the intentional noise of the plastic and tape, creating an uncommon space for the participant and other audience members. As the surroundings vibrate, members of the audience will not only witness the performance, but they will feel it.

type of work:

Installation

Performance Art

Sound Art Performance

Location:

The Icehouse, 625 W Anaheim St, Long Beach, CA 90813

Performance date and time:

Saturday, October 7th, 2017, 7:30 PM to 9:15 PM
