Kiyomi Fukui

Kiyomi Fukui is a Japanese-American artist who lives and works in Long Beach, CA. Recent exhibitions include Poetics of Relation, DAC Gallery, Los Angeles, CA; Thread, El Camino Art Gallery, Torrance, CA; and Bloom Polylogue, Gallery 211, Santa Ana, CA. She received an MFA in Printmaking from California State University Long Beach and a BFA in Graphic Design from La Sierra University. In addition to producing print-based artwork, Kiyomi also practices participatory performance and fiber arts, such as tatting and crocheting. At the core of her practice is an attempt to capture transient intimacy, irrespective of media.

In Kiyomi Fukui's Apologetic Garden, guests are invited to write a letter of apology to whomever they wish, including themselves. Letters will be placed in an envelope along with a seed, and then planted in a special garden bed from which a garden will grow. This is an exercise in reconciliation--meant to help allow us to forgive others, as well as producing a more verdant life for ourselves.

Kiyomi Fukui is part of Michael Nannery’s Mind Games – Group Exhibition.

By crossing this sea of ceramic works and reading the artist statement, the work offers understandings relative to personal grief and discomfort.

Rob Brown

He was born in 1981 in Joplin, Missouri and grew up in Reno, Nevada. His practice includes drawing, printmaking, painting and sound installation. His current work deals with ideas of systems, structure, logic and perception. He employs processed and synthesized sound/video alongside prints and drawings. These works are often realized through a set of self-defined parameters which come from personal research and interests.

His piece “parallax/fade” combines projected monochromatic pattern animations and percussive sounds to create a reactive system. One in which the viewers proximity to the projected image modulates the intensity of the generated sound, which in turn modulates the intensity of the animated visuals. This series of interdependent relationships opens up a space where as the viewer approaches the piece the speed and rhythm of both the sound and visuals slows down, creating an intimate awareness of the viewer/participants physicality, spatial awareness and sense of time.

Conchi Sanford

Daughter of an immigrant mother, Conchi Sanford’s work reflects her own cultural diversity and calls into question social constructs that pertain to identity. Her interest is not so much in the experience, but in the psychological impact that the experience has on the individual and how that manifests itself in the individual’s psyche. While Conchi’s concentration is on sculpture, she creates pieces in a variety of mediums, which allows for much freedom. Conchi holds a Master in Fine Arts from Claremont Graduate University conferred in December of 2011. Currently she is an Adjunct Professor at Crafton Hills College in Yucaipa and at Mt San Jacinto College in Menifee. In addition, she is the Curriculum Developer and Writer for the After-School Arts Enrichment Program in the Santa Ana Unified School District.

Hive is a multi-sensory installation, inspired by bees. Part of the confessional series and as with each of my interactive sculptures, viewers must become active participants in the work. Each hanging beehive shaped dome is attached to another though a sound tube to create an intricate pattern only seen in nature. As participants engage by standing inside the domes, a small light turns on and sound fills the space. Each with its own distinctive sound. Active participants can engage with each other through the sound tubes or simply meditate and reflect.

Patrick Faulk

Earning his BA from San Diego State University in 2006, Faulk entered the commercial arts, working with Sorrento Valley based firm, Buchanan Design. Following a passion, Faulk left the firm to study Cabinet and Furniture Technology at Palomar College. In the Fall of 2011, Faulk was admitted into California State University Fullerton’s MFA Program and graduated three years later with a concentration in drawing and painting. Faulk presently teaches Art at Garden Street Academy in Santa Barbara, Ca and laughs about it every day. It is with wide eyes and a level head that he continues the next leg of his journey; yet quoting the Spanish mystic St. John of The Cross, Faulk smiles:

"If a man wishes to be sure of the road he treads on, he must close his eyes and walk in the dark."

Poiesis according to Ancient Greek thought, is the act of bringing something into being that previously did not exist, and it is from this word, poiesis, that we get the word poem. When I realized this etymological link— that poetry is a kind of work, an act born of words—I was intrigued by a potential piece using language, chance, music, and interaction. Playing this non-traditional instrument, viewers are able to generate chance-based poem-like structures that are then subject to judgement. Is there meaning here to be discovered, or is it just empty words? That poetry can move someone to think and to act is a true celebration of our rationality. Through this piece, I invite the viewer to look, touch, and participate with sound, space, and meaning while musing on a quality of language: that we associate sound with meaning.

type of work:

Interactive

Poetry

Sound Art

Location:

The Packard by Millworks, 205 E Anaheim St, Long Beach, CA 90813

Exhibition Dates:

Saturday, October 7, 2017 to Saturday, October 21, 2017

She decided to leave the west coast and all of its wonderful weather to explore the city of Baltimore and the greater east coast to complete her undergraduate education at the Maryland Institute College of Art. She graduated in 2013 with a B.F.A. in fibers, a minor in creative writing and a concentration in sound art. The next leg of her journey led her to the Windy City, where she graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago with an MFA in Fiber and Material Studies. She currently teaches Conceptual Clothing at New Roads School.

Intimate Instruments is a project I started several years ago to explore textile tactility, and the use of intimate gestures to control somewhat unruly sounding oscillators. For PUMP, I am proposing two different projects exploring this idea of ‘Intimate Instruments’. They will both use the same textile structure- pile - but have two very different interactions. Each piece will engage three of the five senses: Sight, Touch, and Sound.

Her interdisciplinary work resides at the intersection of sound, sculpture, installation and performance. She holds a BA in Philosophy from the University of California, San Diego and an MFA in Sound Art from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Noble has created sound works for collaborative projects in video, dance and object theatre. Her artistic works have now evolved into sculpture and installation influenced by interests in memory, history, narrative, and identity.

Drift is a participatory installation which provides the user an experience of dissociative roaming between real and simulated stimuli through binaural sound, touch, motion, and audience. This project began as an investigation of sound through the personal narratives told by persons with visual impairment after a life of sight. It has now expanded into an exploration of perceptual experience as modulated by technology.

Her work revolves around the themes of memory and personal experiences. Educated at California State Fullerton and Northridge, she had the pleasure of working with artists like Naoh Purifoy, Kim Abeles, and Jim Jinkins. She relished in the knowledge of each artist and heeded their advice to stay true to her vision and skills.

Wallpaper for the Mind is an interactive installation that consists of over 4000 shipping tags structured to mimic the swirling forms of the brain, many inscribed with memories participants shared with Gretchen over a span of 5 years. Viewers are invited to walk through the work and experience of environment while reading the shared memories. They are also welcome to leave a memory of their own for the artist to add to the installation.

DREAM WALKER

DREAM WALKER is an interdisciplinary creative artist group that creates new artistic experiences by bringing together emerging professionals from various nationalities and fields of practice. We believe the performing arts can create an extraordinary connection between artist and audience capable of making the world a better place. We dream a world where people, art, and technology are truly harmonized. The group was originally formed by Jonghee Woo, the current representative/artistic director of DREAM WALKER, along with emerging artists from various fields of the Korean performance industry. Later, the group branched out into the United States through collaboration with American and international artists from various artistic fields. Today, the group has successfully presented shows both in Korea and in the United States over the past few years.

WE CREATE NEW ARTISTIC EXPERIENCES.
WE CONNECT PEOPLE AND PEOPLE; ARTS AND TECHNOLOGY; DREAMS AND REALITY.
WE SHARE VISIONS AND DREAMS; CREATIVITY AND ENTHUSIASM; IDEAS AND EMOTION.
WE PIONEER UNCHARTED ARTISTIC AREAS, UNEXPLORED PLACES, AND UNDISCOVERED NEW POSSIBILITIES
WE BREAK DOWN THE WALLS OF BOUNDARY, LIMITATION, PREJUDICE, AND OPPRESSION SURROUNDING US.
WE MAKE DREAMS COME TRUE AND WALK A NEW WORLD TOGETHER.

DREAMSCAPE: Multisensory Contemporary Performance (Music, Theater, Dance, Multimedia), Inspired by John Cage's Variations VII (1966), Directed By Jonghee Woo, Presented by Artist Group: DREAM WALKER (approximately 60min)

DREAMSCAPE is a new, multimedia artistic attempt to integrate art and technology, incorporating video, sound, dance, theater, and live performance in order to capture true liveness and creativity. The main concept of the project was originally inspired by John Cage's Variations VII — one of the greatest performances in modern performing arts history — which was first performed in 1966 as part of a nine-evening concert series in New York. It was largely stochastic and of indeterminate length, making use of unrecorded, technologically-produced/electrically-amplified sound, and was the product of collaboration with artists from various fields of practice, including theater artists, dancers, musicians, and engineers.

In this project, we will apply the principle of randomness to select the materials for the liveness of the performance. We will therefore use live sounds, real time audio processing, live video, and improvised dance and acting rather than rely upon pre-recorded media, choreographed dance, scripted acting, or any kind of prepared artistic material.

As in John Cage’s original staging, parallel platforms will be set up in the center of the performance space. On them will be placed technological components including sound generators, video devices, and a variety of high and low technological objects. Performers and sound/video artists will improvise artistic experimentations, responding to one another while actors and dancers interact among designers, objects on the platforms, and video projections on the walls. The audience will stand around the platforms, freely able to walk around the space.

Collaborators: Jonghee Woo (Director/Multimedia Designer) Rodrigo Correia (Cinematographer), Davy Sumner (Musician/Sound Director), Lee Kam Ying (Video Designer), Shawn E. Brown (Actor), Erik Dabrowski(Actor), David Michael Hochwalt,(Actor), James T. Majewski (Actor), Pricilla Jin Chung(Actor), Alan Perez (Dancer), Carrisa Songhorian (Dancer), Alexandre Malrait (Actor)
