He had worked in the fields as a youngster growing up in Oaxaca, Mexico and found solace among the colors of the apples, the richness of the hues in the crops. Although it was back-breaking work, Martinez relished the natural beauty that surrounded him during the summers.
One day he took a closer look at his surroundings. Martinez toiled alongside people whose faces painted a different picture, told a different story. They were stories he wanted to share through his emerging artwork.

Narsiso Martinez was born in Oaxaca, Mexico and currently lives in Long Beach, California. He attended Evans Community Adult School and completed high school in 2006 at the age of 29. He earned an Associate of Arts in 2009 from Los Angeles City College. In fall of 2012, he graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from California State University Long Beach. Currently, he is a Masters of Fine Arts candidate at the same institution. He is also the artist in residence at the Long Beach Museum of Art from August 21 - December 22, 2017.

His work has been exhibited at the CSULB University Art Museum, Art Space Purl art gallery in Daegu, South Korea, Angels Gate Cultural Center in San Pedro, California, Palos Verdes Art Center in Rancho Palos Verdes, California, Firehouse art gallery at the Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge in Louisiana, Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery in Los Angeles, California, Collective Arts Incubator gallery in Highland Park, California, Torrance Art Museum in Torrance, California, Cerritos College in Cerritos, California, and presently at Brainworks art gallery in Los Angeles, California, South Bay Contemporary in San Pedro, California, and at the National Immigration Law Center in Los Angeles, California.

Debbie Carlson

Debbie Carlson is a mixed media installation artist, who lives and works in Orange County. She is a first-generation Taiwanese immigrant, who has been living in the United States since 1988. Carlson received her MFA from California State University Long Beach in 2014, and is currently an adjunct studio art professor at Pasadena City College.

Carlson collects castaway materials and found objects and re-defines their character through her work. Her artistic sensibility is based on the notion of transformation, interconnection, and adaption. “Handmade” is essential to Carlson. Through the simple yet laborious process of binding, pulling, and stitching, she reveals the unforeseen interconnectivity between common materials and objects. Her work is adaptable and evokes infinite possibilities of association and interpretation for the viewer.

Statement:

Debbie Carlson’s work expresses and responds to the human experience. It also unveils the invisible and reshapes our perceptions about the environment and reality. The tactile nature of making art allows her to meditate and reflect on her daily encounters. Through the repetition of tying, binding, pulling, stitching, and assembling, new connections start to unfold and the work evolves as a biomorphic form that inhabits space.

The materials that Carlson uses in her work speak to her ideas about community and harmony as well as my desire to make change and to break conventions. Everyday materials and objects suggest our desires, beliefs, and relationships. They relay memories about our lives but they are also associated with the here and now. Melding eclectic objects and materials together is a means for Carlson to explore the history of the things she possesses and to examine the interconnectivities between the materials around her.

In additional, Carlson’s material choices also allows her to challenge social norms and explore broader possibilities. By carefully placing various scales of familiar objects in juxtaposition with the unfamiliar, an uncanny sensation is provoked. The objects used in a work do not generate anything else rather than the relations among the objects themselves in a specific arrangement. Fragments and the uneventful become a cohesive and meaningful whole. Carlson’s work illustrates the ephemeral and transient nature of human existence. It also demonstrates her evaluation of conventional choices without compromising the integrity of individual ideas in a reality that is constantly shifting and reshaping itself. The fact that this experience is transient and will only take place in a specific setting gives my work a certain dignity.

type of work:

Installation

Sculpture/Assemblage

Location:

The Packard by Millworks, 205 E Anaheim St, Long Beach, CA 90813

Exhibition Dates:

Saturday, October 21, 2017

He received an MFA from California State University Long Beach a BA form The University of California at Irvine. His work has been exhibited internationally.

Mushroom II
“Woodward casts trees in concrete, almost as a strange play on the traditions of bonsai. combining his passion for biology and fine art, he has long been interested in the contemporary landscape that surrounds us-concrete parking lots pressing down the roots of trees: the façade of heavily manicured parks and neighborhoods; and the constant push and pull of negotiating an environment made up of both the natural and manmade. His sculptures nod to the cubes of Donald Judd, while foliage outgrowth interrupts the severity of Judd's minimalism. Woodward states, " I thing of the work in terms of a paradox, which leads to the gaining of a sort of spiritual awareness. The truth of the matter is that our human environment is dictated by a perpetual struggle for control for control between the human and natural environments, where at any given moment one or the other will have the advantage.” Grace Kook Anderson

Terry Braunstein

Terry Braunstein’s work takes the form of photography, artist-made books, installation, video, sculpture and public art. A survey of her work was at the Long Beach Museum in 2015/16, and has been shown in museums and galleries nationally and internationally. It is included in numerous public and private collections, including the Getty Center, National Museum of American Art, Library of Congress, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris. Her awards include a COLA Grant (2017), a National Endowment for the Arts Visual Artist Fellowship, Durfee Grant, and National Book Award from the National Museum of Women in the Arts. Braunstein has been awarded 15 public art commissions, notably a Los Angeles Metro Station, Navy Memorial, Long Beach Entryway, and 6 bus stations. She lives and works in Long Beach.

Terry Braunstein is, first and foremost, a collector, constantly culling images from books, magazines, and various types of ephemera, usually with no specific idea of how they might find their way into her artworks. Old magazines, encyclopedias, maps, dollhouse furniture and bric-a-brac found at flea markets, yard sales, and used book stores provide the raw materials that inspire and fuel Braunstein's work. The common thread has been a kind of visual archaeology, exploring the world through research and scientific observation and challenging the viewer to find meaning by delving deeply into her work. Lifted out of their habitual context and juxtaposed to form new narratives, the selected images travel across time, allowing viewers to contemplate the past, the present, as well as the nature of time itself. The resulting artwork is often autobiographical and addresses issues of daily life and personal memory, asking questions about the hidden forces that govern the universe and human history.

The work, Heart Man, is a mixed-media installation excerpted from a piece titled Time Bound which is about the choices one makes as one ages.

She received her B.F.A from California State University, Long Beach and M.F.A from University of California, Irvine. Solo exhibitions of her work have been featured at the Hammer Museum (Project), Michael Kohn Gallery, Andrewshire Gallery in Los Angeles, Pataphysical Society, Portland, OR, Crisp-Ellert Art Museum, St. Augustine, FL, 10 Chancery Lane Gallery, Hong Kong and Galerie Quynh, Vietnam .
Nguyen's work draws upon the imagery of nature, the sciences, and the cosmos but it is not limited to a conventional reading of these realms. It imagines that the depths of the ocean reach into outer space, that through an organic prism, vision can fluctuate between the micro- and macroscopic. Nguyen's practice is devoted to the natural world and its curiosities. It has been her inspiration and a place that she finds meditative and complex but also mysterious. It has allowed her to continuously know more about the world we live in. Nguyen been drawn to 19th century Naturalists like Ernst Haeckel: biologist, philosopher, physician and artist; John Muir: writer, conservationist and advocate of the preservation of the wilderness and Anna Atkins: botanist and photographer.

Visible Invisible will be on display in the front window of Pacific Court and will be viewable 24 hours a day for the run of the exhibit.

Matthew Dumpit graduated from California State University Long Beach in 2015 with a BFA in Metals and Jewelry. Matthew is well versed in a range of fine art metallurgy, as well as light-based installation and interactive works. He is inspired by motion, and seeks to integrate movement and interaction in his works as a means of evoking or triggering emotion. Conceptually, Matthew views both metal and our emotions as malleable, and under constant evolution.

Matthew Dumpit creates an ephemeral light sculpture by reflecting light off of pieces of metal, therein revealing a shimmering river of light on the walls of the dark basement.

Matthew Dumpit is part of Michael Nannery’s Mind Games – Group Exhibition –

Neil Mathis was raised in the Bay Area before relocating to Southern California. He received a BA in Political Science in 2008, and an MFA in Sculpture in 2011. Neil practices a variety of art forms, including carpentry, furniture design, illustration, printmaking, and the fermentation of food and drink. He has always needed to create artistic gibberish and fun nonsense to stay sane in this meat grinder world.

Neil Mathis's Thoughtitarium is an eight foot diameter sound-modulating hemisphere fabricated with burlap, plaster, and water. The Thoughtitarium augments the sounds produced by its occupants, providing space for a unique communication experience. This space of communion hearkens aspects of religious architecture and provides an intimate space for personal conversation for two to six people.

Neil Mathis is part of Michael Nannery’s Mind Games – Group Exhibition.
Mimi Haddon

Mimi Haddon uses fiber sculpture as a tool to express the theme of invasion. She prefers to show her work outside of the gallery walls and in public or unexpected locations and enjoys the freedom of responding to spaces not normally reserved for artistically charged notions. Through her use of color, light and awkward body references, she infuses a sense of humor into her creature-like sculptures. She attributes her fascination with combining humor and post-apocalyptic themes to the many thousands of hours watching I Love Lucy and Twilight Zone reruns as a child. Recently she has been creating costumes for Heidi Duckler Dance Company including for the performance, “The Enormous Wound” with Toogie Barcelo and for “Back in Circulation”, performed at The Brand Library and the West Hollywood Library. She is currently the Fiber Artist in Residence at Dolan-Group, a community minded clothing company, combining craft – fashion – and community awareness. She also teaches workshops regularly at The Craft and Folk Art Museum. She will graduate with an MFA in Fiber Art from CSULB in December 2017.

Mimi Haddon encompassing site-specific installation is formed out of repurposed material, addressing notions of production, space, waste, and accessibility. Recycled materials are cut, folded, and reshaped offering dimensionality and life to the space they inhabit.

Mimi Haddon is part of Michael Nannery’s Mind Games – Group Exhibition.

Deborah Aschheim

Deborah Aschheim makes installations, sculptures and drawings about memory and place. She has mapped networks of video and light across gallery spaces to replicate the fragile, intimate lattice of her own neural networks, collaborated with musicians to create sound sculptures that play original music based on her favorite words and worked with doctors and neuroscientists to learn about memory and forgetting in the brain. She has had fairly recent exhibitions at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas; Oficina de Proyectos Culturales in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico; Suyama Space in Seattle, WA and San Diego State University. She has created permanent public artworks for the Sandler Neurosciences Center at UC San Francisco; for Amazon.com in Seattle, WA; for the City of Sacramento and for the Los Angeles Police Department. She was Hellman Visiting Artist at the Memory and Aging Center in the Neurology Department at UCSF and has received artists’ fellowships from the California Community Foundation, the Center for Cultural Innovation, The City of Los Angeles, City of Pasadena and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts.

Camelot and other stories:
Camelot is a ghost city. In the mash-up of urban architecture, buildings from different cities, some misremembered or out of scale, some hybrids of two or more towers, and some ghosts of buildings that have been torn down or were never actually built share space in a luminous landscape that resonates with the memories of cities in the visitor’s mind. The installation was originally created for Tom Bradley International Terminal at LAX Airport in response to the unique state of mind of travelers in a disoriented limbo, a state that the artist considers dreamlike and poetic. For PUMP, Aschheim is installing Camelot in a conversation with some other sculptural meditations on Twentieth Century modernist architecture to bring to life a shifting personal geography of memory.
