He received a BA in Political Science in 2008, and an MFA in Sculpture in 2011. Neil practices a variety of art forms, including carpentry, furniture design, illustration, printmaking, and the fermentation of food and drink. He has always needed to create artistic gibberish and fun nonsense to stay sane in this meat grinder world.

Neil Mathis's Thoughtitarium is an eight foot diameter sound-modulating hemisphere fabricated with burlap, plaster, and water. The Thoughtitarium augments the sounds produced by its occupants, providing space for a unique communication experience. This space of communion hearkens aspects of religious architecture and provides an intimate space for personal conversation for two to six people.

Neil Mathis is part of Michael Nannery’s Mind Games – Group Exhibition.
Common Sense

"Common Senses", an original aural and visual concept by Martin Espino, explores the 5 Senses by performing ambient and groove oriented music along with Video Digital Artist, William Almas and Cinematographer, Ivan Cordeiro. The three artists will interpret the senses around Eating and Food, of Taste and Smell and also incorporate the Sounds of various restaurants, local eateries, chefs. The artists seek to use all of the other sense, through their performance, to inspire cravings for food. PUMP Patrons are invited to participate on instruments provided by the artists.

Martin Espino has been composting and performing both traditional to experimental music for at least 50 years, focusing on Ancient Mexico. He has performed and toured with musicians from all over the world and at venues like L.A. Philharmonic, in motion picture soundtracks and theatrical works as well as pre-schoolers and cultural events. He is teaches at grade schools, colleges and libraries. He also works as an instruments craftsman.

William Almas began his adventure in the visual arts as a painter. His large scale portraits gave way to mixed media explorations. Faced with the daunting task of storing the fruits of his labors and with the advent of the home computer revolution William upgraded his skill set to digital imagery. This made his life simpler on his day job and offered an opportunity to see what could be done in the virtual environment. Starting by re-imagining his paintings with wild variations of saturated color Almas then moved into the realm of video production. His wild multi-layered "Retina-Burning" visuals have graced screens, walls, buildings, even shrubs in support of performers such as phog masheeen, Martin Espino, Skunk Puppet and Magic Bullet Theory.

type of work:

Performance Art

Scent/Olfactory

Sound Art

Sound Art Performance

Video Projection

Location:

The Icehouse, 625 W Anaheim St, Long Beach, CA 90813

Performance date and time:

Saturday, October 21st, 2017, 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM

Rob Brown

Rob Brown is a visual and sound artist who lives in Santa Ana, California. He was born in 1981 in Joplin, Missouri and grew up in Reno, Nevada. His practice includes drawing, printmaking, painting and sound installation. His current work deals with ideas of systems, structure, logic and perception. He employs processed and synthesized sound/video alongside prints and drawings. These works are often realized through a set of self-defined parameters which come from personal research and interests.

His piece “parallax/fade” combines projected monochromatic pattern animations and percussive sounds to create a reactive system. One in which the viewers proximity to the projected image modulates the intensity of the generated sound, which in turn modulates the intensity of the animated visuals. This series of interdependent relationships opens up a space where as the viewer approaches the piece the speed and rhythm of both the sound and visuals slows down, creating an intimate awareness of the viewer/participants physicality, spatial awareness and sense of time.

Cathy Hsiao

Cathy Hsiao came from a background in craft, specifically weaving animal fibers dyed with plants, raised by a devout Buddhist mom. “Plant and Animal Studio” keeps this name as a token to these histories. Her current practice embeds an intimate politics of rhythm and ritual to translate cultural languages and create new ones. To that end she creates multi-narrative works in sculpture, sound, weaving, photography and video that switch codes depending on context. Many of her processes are grounded in craft practices from Asian textiles such as weaving and natural dyeing. Hsiao iterates these traditions into a vocabulary influenced by the history of Western abstraction.

Songbook for Sculpture / Sculpture Orchestra is an improvisation-based work that transforms sculptures and molds into performative objects by activating their interior spaces and surfaces. The sound rearranges a traditional Taiwanese folk song for guitar, sculptural objects, molds and drum machine and hip-hop. The performance re-choreographs the boundaries between form and use to locate a specific psychic space between one's own voice and it's interior echo, the voice of different languages and cultures. By reviving the sensuousness of objects, their tactile, auditory and participatory potential it aims to produce new hybrid languages for sculpture. A printed score of the performance is produced. Site specific sculptures (freestanding on plinths) are cast from gathered gravel and sand around Long Beach shore and Joshua Tree desert.

Conchi Sanford

Daughter of an immigrant mother, Conchi Sanford’s work reflects her own cultural diversity and calls into question social constructs that pertain to identity. Her interest is not so much in the experience, but in the psychological impact that the experience has on the individual and how that manifests itself in the individual’s psyche. While Conchi’s concentration is on sculpture, she creates pieces in a variety of mediums, which allows for much freedom. Conchi holds a Master in Fine Arts from Claremont Graduate University conferred in December of 2011. Currently she is an Adjunct Professor at Crafton Hills College in Yucaipa and at Mt San Jacinto College in Menifee. In addition, she is the Curriculum Developer and Writer for the After-School Arts Enrichment Program in the Santa Ana Unified School District.

Hive is a multi-sensory installation, inspired by bees. Part of the confessional series and as with each of my interactive sculptures, viewers must become active participants in the work. Each hanging beehive shaped dome is attached to another though a sound tube to create an intricate pattern only seen in nature. As participants engage by standing inside the domes, a small light turns on and sound fills the space. Each with its own distinctive sound. Active participants can engage with each other through the sound tubes or simply meditate and reflect.

Patrick Faulk

Earning his BA from San Diego State University in 2006, Faulk entered the commercial arts, working with Sorrento Valley based firm, Buchanan Design. Following a passion, Faulk left the firm to study Cabinet and Furniture Technology at Palomar College. In the Fall of 2011, Faulk was admitted into California State University Fullerton’s MFA Program and graduated three years later with a concentration in drawing and painting. Faulk presently teaches Art at Garden Street Academy in Santa Barbara, Ca and laughs about it every day. It is with wide eyes and a level head that he continues the next leg of his journey; yet quoting the Spanish mystic St. John of The Cross, Faulk smiles:

"If a man wishes to be sure of the road he treads on, he must close his eyes and walk in the dark."

Poiesis according to Ancient Greek thought, is the act of bringing something into being that previously did not exist, and it is from this word, poiesis, that we get the word poem. When I realized this etymological link— that poetry is a kind of work, an act born of words—I was intrigued by a potential piece using language, chance, music, and interaction. Playing this non-traditional instrument, viewers are able to generate chance-based poem-like structures that are then subject to judgement. Is there meaning here to be discovered, or is it just empty words? That poetry can move someone to think and to act is a true celebration of our rationality. Through this piece, I invite the viewer to look, touch, and participate with sound, space, and meaning while musing on a quality of language: that we associate sound with meaning.

type of work:

Interactive

Poetry

Sound Art

Location:

The Packard by Millworks, 205 E Anaheim St, Long Beach, CA 90813

Exhibition Dates:

Saturday, October 7, 2017 to Saturday, October 21, 2017

She is a video designer graduated from CalArts School of Theater Video for Performance in 2016. From 2009 to 2012, she was working in the film industry as a visual effects artist, now she is particularly interested in inventing new forms of digital arts for performance and interactive installation, her work always immerse the audience into unique and uncanny experiences. Her installation Far and Near You and Me is the first prize winner of 2017 EX prize (Electronic experimental arts), and selected to exhibit in JUSTMAD8 Madrid, Spain. Ting Zhang's video design credits include: The Institute of Memory (3D Animation and Video Content) directed by Lars Jan at Under the Radar in NYC and REDCAT in Los Angeles, Sleighting directed by Rachel Ho at Bootleg Los Angeles, FMX Festival de México: Life is a Dream directed by Claudio Valdés Kuri. As a visual effects artist, the feature films that she participated in are: I am No.4 by Dreamworks, Boardwalk Empire by HBO, The Pacific by HBO Films (63rd Emmy Visual Effects Award).

Far and Near, You and Me is about the beauty of the constant choices that we all make when we are in front of each other, what we choose to cover and what we reveal. It represents a personal understanding about the beauty of distance between people and the way we interact with each other. It reminds us that we have met so many people from all over the world. We all come from different cultures, have different nationalities, skin colors and languages. It is about meeting and forgetting, the memories of those people in our lives.
