Narsiso Martinez

Narsiso Martinez needed a job so he went back to what he knew – picking fruit and vegetables in agricultural fields. He had worked in the fields as a youngster growing up in Oaxaca, Mexico and found solace among the colors of the apples, the richness of the hues in the crops. Although it was back-breaking work, Martinez relished the natural beauty that surrounded him during the summers.
One day he took a closer look at his surroundings. Martinez toiled alongside people whose faces painted a different picture, told a different story. They were stories he wanted to share through his emerging artwork.

Narsiso Martinez was born in Oaxaca, Mexico and currently lives in Long Beach, California. He attended Evans Community Adult School and completed high school in 2006 at the age of 29. He earned an Associate of Arts in 2009 from Los Angeles City College. In fall of 2012, he graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from California State University Long Beach. Currently, he is a Masters of Fine Arts candidate at the same institution. He is also the artist in residence at the Long Beach Museum of Art from August 21 - December 22, 2017.

His work has been exhibited at the CSULB University Art Museum, Art Space Purl art gallery in Daegu, South Korea, Angels Gate Cultural Center in San Pedro, California, Palos Verdes Art Center in Rancho Palos Verdes, California, Firehouse art gallery at the Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge in Louisiana, Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery in Los Angeles, California, Collective Arts Incubator gallery in Highland Park, California, Torrance Art Museum in Torrance, California, Cerritos College in Cerritos, California, and presently at Brainworks art gallery in Los Angeles, California, South Bay Contemporary in San Pedro, California, and at the National Immigration Law Center in Los Angeles, California.

Debbie Carlson

Debbie Carlson is a mixed media installation artist, who lives and works in Orange County. She is a first-generation Taiwanese immigrant, who has been living in the United States since 1988. Carlson received her MFA from California State University Long Beach in 2014, and is currently an adjunct studio art professor at Pasadena City College.

Carlson collects castaway materials and found objects and re-defines their character through her work. Her artistic sensibility is based on the notion of transformation, interconnection, and adaption. “Handmade” is essential to Carlson. Through the simple yet laborious process of binding, pulling, and stitching, she reveals the unforeseen interconnectivity between common materials and objects. Her work is adaptable and evokes infinite possibilities of association and interpretation for the viewer.

Statement:

Debbie Carlson’s work expresses and responds to the human experience. It also unveils the invisible and reshapes our perceptions about the environment and reality. The tactile nature of making art allows her to meditate and reflect on her daily encounters. Through the repetition of tying, binding, pulling, stitching, and assembling, new connections start to unfold and the work evolves as a biomorphic form that inhabits space.

The materials that Carlson uses in her work speak to her ideas about community and harmony as well as my desire to make change and to break conventions. Everyday materials and objects suggest our desires, beliefs, and relationships. They relay memories about our lives but they are also associated with the here and now. Melding eclectic objects and materials together is a means for Carlson to explore the history of the things she possesses and to examine the interconnectivities between the materials around her.

In additional, Carlson’s material choices also allows her to challenge social norms and explore broader possibilities. By carefully placing various scales of familiar objects in juxtaposition with the unfamiliar, an uncanny sensation is provoked. The objects used in a work do not generate anything else rather than the relations among the objects themselves in a specific arrangement. Fragments and the uneventful become a cohesive and meaningful whole. Carlson’s work illustrates the ephemeral and transient nature of human existence. It also demonstrates her evaluation of conventional choices without compromising the integrity of individual ideas in a reality that is constantly shifting and reshaping itself. The fact that this experience is transient and will only take place in a specific setting gives my work a certain dignity.

Andre Woodward

Andre Woodward is a Southern California artist whose work examines the very complicated relationship we have with nature. He received an MFA from California State University Long Beach a BA form The University of California at Irvine. His work has been exhibited internationally.

“Woodward casts trees in concrete, almost as a strange play on the traditions of bonsai. combining his passion for biology and fine art, he has long been interested in the contemporary landscape that surrounds us-concrete parking lots pressing down the roots of trees: the façade of heavily manicured parks and neighborhoods; and the constant push and pull of negotiating an environment made up of both the natural and manmade. His sculptures nod to the cubes of Donald Judd, while foliage outgrowth interrupts the severity of Judd's minimalism. Woodward states, " I thing of the work in terms of a paradox, which leads to the gaining of a sort of spiritual awareness. The truth of the matter is that our human environment is dictated by a perpetual struggle for control for control between the human and natural environments, where at any given moment one or the other will have the advantage.” Grace Kook Anderson

SynthLab was founded in 2015 and is directed by Rychard Cooper and Matt Pogue.
Rychard Cooper is a professor of composition and electronic music at CSULB. Matt Pogue [Faraday Cage] is a multi-instrumentalist who does graphic design and web development for the music department at CSULB. Together with Tom Koch [univac] (visual effects artist and circuit bender), SynthLab began producing electronic music concerts for CSULB music students. Now, having expanded beyond the University, the collective continues to engage audiences in greater Southern California, most recently having participated in the SoundPedro sound-art festival (June 2017).

SynthLab is a collective of electronic musicians and visual artists based in Long Beach, CA. They produce multimedia concerts featuring original sound experiments, live video projections, and interactive installations.

Pablo Bert

Pablo Bert is an electronic musician and mathematician from Long Beach. Pablo got his start as a chiptune/IDM DJ in 2003. Now he spends most of his time playing with synths and twiddling knobs. He prefers producing without a computer and plans to perform at PUMP for the first time on an all hardware synthesizer and sequencer setup.

Bert performs as part of SynthLab.

Jesse Nason is a California native that has been playing keyboards and drums in various bands in the OC/LA area, including Deccatree, AM and currently with Perfect Beings. He is a collector of sounds, and modular is the next target on the checklist. Some of his influences for synth based music are Tom Morello, Pink Floyd, Alessandro Cortini, Suzanne Ciani and Brian Eno. He is a fan of melody, drones, and noise coordination.
